When any home is built, a bull dozer or road grader is utilized to level all of the dirt before pouring a slab and building a home. When the leveling process occurs, sand, gravel and mostly clay is mixed up. Over the years these settle at different rates.

Consequently there are air pockets under all slabs. When a leak occurs, the water travels the path of least resistance through these air pockets. Eventually, it will fill all of the air pockets and begin to push up against the bottom of the slab.

This is typically when a home owner will see moisture coming up in their floor. The only remedy is to stop water from leaking under the slab and let time and gravity to percolate the water into the earth.

Some homes and situations will allow for multiple solutions. Other homes may only allow for one method to complete the repair. Characteristics such as age, size, remodels/additions that may have changed original plumbing will factor into the solutions possible.

Time and gravity is the home owners friend when experiencing a slab leak. The more the water is off, the more the earth can pull down this water into the soil and away from your slab. When turning off the water no special care is needed.

However, when turning the main shut off/on line on, one should open a faucet at a sink to relieve pressure and turn the water on slowly until fully re-pressurized. Sudden surges caused by turning the mainline on in a rapid fashion could result in a water hammer that could cause a new link or damage your appliance that water is fed to such as dishwashers, waters, ice makers, etc.
